Leave No Trace

PLAN AHEAD

  • Visit the backcountry in groups less than 12.
  • Avoid popular areas during peak times.
  • Package food in reusable containers.

LOW IMPACT

  • Stay on designated trails.
  • Do not shortcut switchbacks.
  • Use map and compass.
  • Step to the downhill side of the trails and talk softly when encountering stock.
  • Choose an established campsite.
  • Camp at least 200 feet away from lakes and streams.

PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT

  • Pack everything that you bring into the backcountry back out with you.
  • Protect wildlife and your food by storing securely.
  • Pick up all spilled food.

DISPOSE OF WHAT YOU CAN'T PACK OUT

  • Deposit human waste in holes dug 6 to 8 inches deep at least 200 feet from water, camp or trails.
  • Use toilet paper sparingly. Pack them out.
  • To wash yourself or dishes, carry water 200 feet away from streams or lakes, and use small amounts of biodegradable soap. Scatter used dish water.
  • Inspect your campsite after your stay. Pack out all trash.

MINIMIZE IMPACTS OF FIRE

  • Always carry a lightweight stove for cooking.
  • Where fires are permitted, use established fire rings.
  • Gather sticks no larger than an adult's wrist. Do not snap branches off live, dead, or downed trees.
  • Put out campfires completely before leaving camp.  Never leave a fire unattended.
  • Remove all unburned trash from fire ring and scatter the cool ashes over a large area well away from camp.
